The thing that concerns me most is the PG, we have so many, yet we have none. Hopefully there will be a fix for this!

Sledge has to make himself into a decent shooter. Not a great shooter. Ronald Moore level shooting ability is enough. He needs to finish better on drives. He's slightly built and can get knocked around. He's not built like Scott or MoMo. Otherwise I think he is fine.

My observations from the game:
1. Tough pill to swallow. Felt like I was watching a repeat of pretty much any one of last year's losses. Hope this doesn't become a trend once again this season. This culture of choking in tight games has simply got to stop at some point.
2. Bowman and Laury are clearly our leaders. No clue why Bowman wasn't in the starting lineup. Perhaps Cluess thinks he's more effective coming off the bench. Regardless, he needs to be in the starting 5.
3. Armand's lack of late game execution concerns me. Misses a big FT and also was responsible for a silly foul late in the game that sent CSU to the line and gave them the lead.
4. Laury played his ass off. Tough to knock him for missing those 2 FTs at the end, he clearly is the class of this team.
5. Very disappointed in Sledge's performance. Was hoping to see him a lot more under control and comfortable than last year, but seems like he picked up from mid last season instead of from the Ohio State game.
6. These are by far the nicest jerseys we've ever had IMO. That's one positive to take from today's game.
7. Cluess has to shoulder some of the blame regardless of if he called the right plays coming out of timeouts down the stretch. His inability to make in game adjustments when the opposing team is on a run and the fact that his teams can never seem to get a defensive stop when they need one is a major problem and he needs to be held somewhat accountable for this.
8. Isaiah Williams is going to be a good player, and my guess is that it will happen sooner than we expect. Wouldn't be surprised if this kid drops 20+ on Wofford.
9. The Gomez DNP is a mystery to me, but gotta let this one slide as I imagine there's a good reason for it that none of us know about.
10. Today was a tough loss, but this team has talent and will bounce back. The Wofford game will be a big indicator of this team's heart and toughness. We need to build a big lead and keep the foot on the pedal.

Gregcrow you may be right about Cluess coaching but the team never executes in close games down the stretch, and part of that blame has to be on coaching. That being said I will still take Cluess over 99% of coaches because he wins, but he could be amazing if his teams could win close games and didn't blow big leads. And yes Ct bill you are right about the leads not really being that big the way we play but it is still very hard to swallow. Also back to Gregcrow, I think my biggest problem with Poole is he can't play with sledge because Cluess system can't have two guys who can't shoot 3's in the back court. The best lineup is Laury, Armand, English, Williams and Bowman and rest one at a time with a pg. On a final positive note with Williams, English, Armand and Bowman there will be games Iona 3's teams to death and they could beat anyone on a day they are hot.

I see that Poole not did hurt his 3+ year average 4 points and 1 rebound... Mike Rice must have had some basketball sense...I never saw the value a 1 year player especially when players of potential watch and waste a year from the bench...But that is just IMO... For what ever reason William skirted the last 2-3 weeks of practice period off, it sure hurt us in this game...As good as he his going to be, the rust was apparent.....Despite the outcome I hope you guys used Horizon...Almost as good as a small clear T.V.

It is the Ohio Curse.... Ohio State, Kent State, Cleveland State (twice) and Bryant were all games we lost while playing in Ohio.

Ah you guys are overreacting. First game, a lot of new players. We got to know by now this is Cluess's system and if we're up 15pts its like a conventional team being up 8 because of how many possessions we generate. We have to understand this by now. We lost simply because we did't shoot well in the second half. At one point I think we were 6-21 from 3. If this team doesn't shoot well, chances are good we lose. I don't care who we're playing. We've got a lot of nice pieces to work with. One of the differences between us and Siena fans is that their team looked horrible last night and they are gushing about their future. We played a good mid on the road, lost by four in the first game of the year and we're all jumping off the ledge. One thing I'll say is that we need to finish better at the rim, and I don't mean Laury or Bowman. We missed a fair amount of bunnies from what I saw and Sledge has to work on finishing when he penetrates. All in all not a bad start. It hurts because it was a winnable game. And letting them score the first 11 points of the second half really hurt. I think we missed a bunny or two right in there. Team has a lot of offensive talent. They need to work and get better. Hines and Robinson played a bit, two years ahead of schedule!!! AJ looked rusty, I don't think he made a shot. If he and Williams and Bowman knock down some threes, teams can't key on Sean. Bill, Not out on the ledge just disappointed. I also agree with all of 05's points below. I think that we will see that Cleveland State is not a very good team and they also had new players to merge into their system. OT is right, we choked down the stretch. I don't pin the blame on Sean, but he missed a wide open 3, a F/T, had a T/O, a bad foul, and didn't seem to lead the team late in the game.

The most asked question on this board..........''Does any body know if so and so was sick or injured?''......I will study and review all answers for reasonable reasons for the well kept secrets...I have always had high regards for privacy rights, but when you enter especially the Sport World you should except to surrender some of those rights...But....we will shortly enter a sport world when scores will not be announced for fear of hurting losers feelings.....

Gotta take the good with the bad with Cluess and Iona. Lots of scoring, lots of wins and a few searing blown leads. Overall no reason to panic. It's early and we clearly have a lot of talent (granted, due to a family obligation I only saw the first half). Cluess will win a lot of games but blow more than his share of leads. It's part of the package with him. I hope this improves as the season goes on, but we'll see. Probably the biggest need we'll have is for one player to consistently step up at the end of the game, and that will take time to develop. I must say that it is very early but I don't really get the infatuation with Poole. I don't think that he will be a major contributor on a team like Iona.
