iona05--Not sure, but I don't think Sledge is taking summer courses--can't practice unless he does.

just wondering what the opinion is of most on the board. There is at least one scholarship available and rumor of possibly a 2nd opening up. If the staff does not land the mystery recruit in the next couple weeks do you think TC just holds it for the '15 class? noticed today that Monmouth offered 6'8'' 250lb Quadree Smith. has numerous MM offers with some from MAAC and I have seen reports he could be a big time rebounder. Maybe the staff would take a chance on a player like him?

I'm on team sledge all the way but from the circumstances it doesn't look like he will be around. I'm going off speculation from everyone on here reporting that he isn't enrolled in summer classes, he isn't participating with the team and off his twitter feed. I hope this isn't the case because I'm a real big supporter of this kid and what he brings to our team. Now with that said, if we do have 1 last scholarship available I do believe that our staff will bring in another juco big man which at this point is our weakness. I think that Dublin will help laury down low with his physicality but I don't see him being a huge contributor. Also I've seen CS play and yes he is exciting and will help iona at the point but he is very small and will be a matchup problem defensively no matter what defense we play. I don't think we are finished with recruiting. I feel like TC and Staff are trying to get a juco big that will either start this year or come in midway thru the year like laury. Look forward to the upcoming season and what it offers.

Just noticed Sledge's Instagram logo shows him in an Iona uniform with the Gael logo in the background. Looks like he is still a Gael. Probably missing summer classes to be with the newborn.

Joebird I think you hit it spot on. I would be really surprised if Sledge were to not come back. I am sure his goal now as a new father is to finish up his degree at Iona and begin his career and provide for his family.

I am a big supporter of this kid and what he brings to our team. quote....... Also I've seen CS play and yes he is exciting and will help iona at the point but he is very small and will be a matchup problem defensively no matter what defense we play.?....
gordan4mvp.....I hope you fully understand this to be strictly a basketball difference of opinion, and nothing that would cause personal animosity is involved. But......... What does, Sledge as you state ''What he brings to our team''...Please enlighten me because that statement needs some form of justification before excepted at face value...An unbiased look at his stats and overall performance outside of a rare athletic eye catching move will reveal his true worth...By any true emotion free evaluation he at most has become a rest giving substitution.......It was also shown by the shortened playing time given to him... Although almost exactly the same size, you diminish and feel that Casimir height will be a problem, but Sledge's will not... There are some will say that the ''Oldtimer'' has a vendetta against Sledge...I can only hope that team value and proven facts will prevail over personal emotion... I have never had any contacts with Sledge, never posted a personal bad word about him, but I will never relinquish my right as a loyal long time fan to question his Iona team basketball worth...That is a fans prerogative...It may seem to some modern agers as a unfair cruel way to post, but I of course come from a long lost world where you could be told without fear of hurt feelings, that you were not doing a job satisfactory...It usually made you try harder...

In fairness to Sledge he was the starting PG a couple years ago when the Gaels went on that winning streak at the end of the year and won the MAAC tourney for the automatic bid and played well. Does Casimir have more promise because of his shooting ability? yes I believe he does. But having said that it has been proven the Gaels can win important games and the MAAC tourney with Sledge as the starting PG. IMO, because of experience he would be ahead of Casimir as practice starts and would be up to him to work hard to keep his starting position, because Casimir without question will give him a battle for those minutes
OT-- can you share the " proven facts?" What is the team's record when he plays? Since he has played, we have won the MAAC tournament & regular season title, and gone to the NCAA tournament (where he excelled) & NIT. You refer to "modern agers" when you discuss "posting." Did previous generations "post?" The objection may be to discussing possible shortcomings in a forum for the world to see. When a "former generation ager" was discussed, it was done to a significantly smaller audience, which may have not even included the subject. This from a Medicare eligible war veteran.

Super.....Proven facts......Iona's record for the years Sledge played would have been the same had he played or not, and would have IMO been better if the scholarship had been put to better use.... There is no need to end up every of your relative postings with a reminder each time that you to are a combat veteran...It smacks of a unnecessary defense of a imaginary slight... I tip my hat to all who served no matter where or when and have never used that as a argue mental or comparison point...I see your constant use of it as a unwarranted and veiled attack against perceived thoughts....

I've been married 16 years now. Does that count as being a war veteran?
Sledge couldn't get off our bench down the stretch last year. Even if his game jumps a bit during this offseason--doubtful, since he was busy having a kid--he's not going to see an increase in PT this year. If Sledge jumps from role player to key player for us, we're only winning 15 games.
