Ron Rowan's son is a five star recruit? That's wild! Good stuff here.

Right now all the Mullin, St John's talk is sickening but this could be great in the long run for all of us fellow St John's haters. In my mind this has a much better chance to be a disaster than to be a success. It is very difficult to be successful coaching with zero experience, not even as an assistant ( which Ruland had). He not only has to be a good coach but also be a recruiter. I am hoping this ends up being a very big nostalgic mistake!

THE SJU hates in off the charts! I bet TC would think you are all way off base!!!!

Who is calling the shots on this one... Mike Repole? This was the new presidents hire. The President had the final say but you know it was all Louie's idea. Kind of selfish on his part, because it is just something he wanted for Mullin. But he can't be objective because he s almost like a son to him. He had wanted Mullin ever since they were interviewing Doherty. It seems Louie was against Doherty hire because when he recruited Doherty, evidently he dissed Louie. You never burn your bridges and that is what he did.
I thought that Repole was one of the so called "new guard alumni" that wanted a young aggressive coach like Masiello or the Hurleys. But it seems that he deferred to the old guard. I don't think anyone really knows how it all played out behind closed doors. I'm really just speculating based on media rumors.

Zags pushing Grasso for SJU... "Mullin will need to set about hiring a strong staff to help him transition to college and recruit. Iona assistant Jared Grasso, arguably the top recruiter in the metropolitan area, would be a strong hire.
Mullin is also close with Kentucky assistant Barry “Slice” Rohrssen — a fellow Brooklyn boy..."zagsblog.com/articles/chris-mullin-expected-to-take-st-johns-job/#more-132024Tony Chiles is also one heck of a recruiter. It would be a big mistake if SJU doesn't keep him. Interesting about Chiles. Among other things he was Lavin's Philly guy. A hotbed. He got Nuri Lyndsey and Rysheed Jordan from Philly. At least you have to say that Jordan worked out pretty well. Not a bad idea to keep him on.

But actually Tau, that was more a function of Lavin showing himself to be a bad coach then anything else. People negative recruit on Lavin like crazy. They say why would you want to go play for someone who is a "great recruiter" but has shown himself to be someone who can't coach. And they aren't wrong. Chiles did get Jordan though.

A successful St. John's program is good for NY basketball, which is good for Iona.

Zagoria
NEW YORK — Chris Mullin hasn’t even had his introductory presser yet and he’s already making moves.
The new St. John’s coach scored a major coup on the coaching and recruiting front by nabbing St. John’s product and former Iowa State assistant Matt Abdelmassih to his staff.
“Extremely sad but happy to move onto the next stage in my life,” he Tweeted.
Abdelmassih was the Cyclones’ lead recruiter on Cheick Diallo, the 6-foot-9 Mcdonald’s All-American forward out of Our Savior New American. Diallo is considering Iowa State, St. John’s, Kentucky, Kansas and Pitt. He is also close with St. John’s guard Felix Balamou.
The Des Moines Register also credited Abdelmassih for recruiting Royce White, Jameel McKay, Abdel Nader, Dustin Hogue and DeAndre Kane to Iowa State.

Abdelmassih is loved by NY/NJ kids. If Chris Mullin can add Grasso, "Slice" and Ed Pinckney to the farm....wow! Let's really hope Grasso stays.
