I think Lavin is going to get Arizona St job[/quote] I will never cease to be amazed by college administrators will continue to rehire past their prime, washed up coaches in the vague hope that they by some miracle regain the magic of youth...I know of few leaders that are rewarded continually for failure then college basketball coaches...

I think Lavin is going to get Arizona St job He's got a shot but Capel is the front runner. Lavin can bring West Coast recruits and energy to Tempe.

Are they close enough in age to have played against each other? No chance of playing while rebuilding, but maybe down the road

I've NEVER been a SJU fan, but while I've never met him, I've only heard good things about Chris Mullin. Only good things. Back in the early eighties, I spent many a summer night at Mulcahy watching pickup games, and CM was often a participant. It was reported that he and Rory Grimes were VG friends, and that was why CM participated so often. As for playing us, that is probably up to their AD and Looie. On his own I think that Chris would schedule us. My question is, would the game HAVE to be in Queens? And if so would we agree? Would you?

I played in a few of those pickup games in the early 80's. While CM was a very good player at the time, Burtt, Walter Berry and Springer were the best players in those pickup games. You could see CM was a great shooter but those games were more street ball than team play. There were a lot of Iona greats playing in those runs as well as St. John's and others. There were approximately 13-15 players no more and if you lost you sat! Great competition, great memories!

I think Lavin is going to get Arizona St job I can't fathom why, at this point, they would hire Lavin as their head coach. Maybe as a lead recruiter, but not as the head coach. How could they even consider it?

You are correct Rory Grimes was good friends with Chris Mullin. As for a game, Coach Carnesecca told me 30 years ago that it wasn't a natural rival, other out of conference games had to be scheduled. Maybe that was BS, but that was 30 years ago.

It appears to me now that hiring Mullin was in the works for some time. That is why they suddenly elected him to their Hall of Fame in February. They wanted to bring him in to guage his interest. This is why they "never even reached out to anyone else". Not even Masiello. They knew what they wanted to do all along. There was never any extension talks with Lavin. Those negotiations were all about Lavin's buyout.

I was at the Duke/SJU Iona doubleheader and was told he was gone at the end of the year no matter what They must have decided some time after that, Tau, to bring in Mullin. All of the the sudden out of the clear blue sky they elect him to their Hall of Fame. That is why they never reached out to anyone else. Did they do their due diligence? I have to question that. I suspect the booster that said "this is a Hail Mary" was Mike Repole. He of the Vitaminwater fortune. I think he was part of the new guard alumni that wanted an aggressive young coach.

How could they even consider it? Again he is not the lead candidate, but he is the opposite personality of Herb Sendek. Sendek is dull and not a great recruiter. Alvin is outgoing and can recruit especially on the West Coast. Don't think Lavin would take an approximate $180K salary as lead recruiter.
