Guys, Forgot to mention here that Vitale ran a great event last week in Sarasota for the benefit of the Jimmy V Foundation. Once again, a great night--with many references to the Gaels. (Love him or hate him--Vitale does an unbelievable job fundraising for pediatric cancer research and invests a tremendous amount of time--and ego--to this cause.) $1.7 million this year; $10.5 in the 8 years of the event. 800+ attendees, including 100+ D1 coaches. Both Whittenburgh and Jim Calhoun referenced Jeff Ruland during their rematks. My wife and I again assisted with coordination. Consider a donation: dickvitaleonline.com/community/dick-vitale-gala.htmlNick Valvano has retired as CEO of the Foundation--Could not lobby for a Valvano team to participate in Jimmy V Classic.

Wow--a year has gone by!!
Tomorrow evening, Dickie V will once again host his annual fundraising gala in Sarasota to support the V Foundation and its pediatric cancer initiatives. The $1000 a plate event is completely sold out with plans made for 900+ attendees. Dick hopes to raise $2 million this year with a variety of fundraising opportunities before/during/after the event.
My wife and I never tire of helping to coordinate this initiative as it honors our most famous coach (sorry TC). Here's a link if you might consider contributing and where you can learn more about the gala. dickvitaleonline.com/community/dick-vitale-gala.html

If I thought last year went by fast--Wow! Vitale event for the V Foundation is sold out (900+) for 5/15. Dick just did a 12 hour local telethon to kick off the event and raised $105,000 already. His goal is $1.5 million+
Even a small donation is appreciated: dickvitaleonline.com/community/dick-vitale-gala.html
There is a rumor that one other board poster is planning to attend!
At the Trustees dinner last month, I spoke with one of the trustees, Charles McCabe, about his interest in honoring Valvano at some event at the college, a la Guerin. I am going to pursue that--perhaps honoring our 1st NCAA team as a way of rekindling memories of Valvano and getting Ruland back into the fold.

Once again, Dickie V. has sold out his annual gala for Cancer research which is set for Friday evening. All net proceeds go to pediatric cancer research. My wife and I are, once again, assisting with the coordination. If you want to help: Fans can still send donations by mail (c/o The V Foundation, 106 Towerview, Cary, NC 27513) or by calling 1-800-4JIMMYV. Super, Charlie McCabe is no longer a trustee and I do not think he was at the Trustee dinner. Dave McCabe (not related to Charlie) is a trustee and I am sure he would be very interested in finding a way to bring Valvano, the 1980 team and the Jimmy V Foundation into the fold.

Meant Dave--sat next to him at last year's event. (Too many Iona McCabes--many of whom were honored at the recent Trustees event. I went to Iona with Hugh.)

Getting old--Me that is! This event never seems to get old. It never fails to sell out. Friday night: 910+ attendees--raised $3.1 million. Sad night-overshadowed by Chris Berman's wife's tragic death. (Chris was an honoree.) $21 million in its 11 year history. My wife and I always happy to help organize. Sure wish the school would do something in partnership with the V Foundation. www.heraldtribune.com/photogallery/LK/20170514/NEWS/514009997/PH/1

Sure wish the school would do something in partnership with the V Foundation. How about at each V school, the V Foundation scholarship an incoming, cancer surviving freshman as a nice start?

Dickie V outdid himself--raising $3.7 million--over $25 million since inception. Tough part of the evening is meeting some of the kids who have benefitted, having undergone incredibly excruciating treatments--so many heroic families. (Tougher part is learning that some of last year's kids did not make it.)
Grasso in the house--only 2nd Iona rep in 11 years. 81 other D1 coaches attended.

This marks the 11th year of our direct involvement in this tremendous event at the Ritz Carlton in Sarasota. 850 tickets already sold with the expectation of another SRO evening--900+. Vitale's goal is an astounding $5 million bringing the overall total to $30+ million since its inception at Dick's home in 2006. www.jimmyv.org/get-involved/signature-events/dick-vitale-gala/

As it should. Just an out-of-the-box thought of a way to spread a small fraction of that money around at a more personal level. In addition to the disease itself, many families of kids battling cancer battle financial hardships from the medical bills. Unfortunately, I know this first-hand. Scholarshipping an incoming freshman cancer survivor at the V schools not only eases the burden, but provides hope and confidence by investing in that kids future.
