Ok cool. Tim Cluess deserved to be honored just as much, if not more. Get this done sooner than later! The problem is Iona hasn’t recognized anyone but Guerin until now. With such a rich history Iona has a lot of catch up time to recognize all that should have been: Ruland, Burtt , Cluess all more than deserve it immediately. Maybe Iona can be like the Mets, who had rarely retired numbers, but now seem like they will every year going forward. Iona needs to start doing the same. Way to go, Joe! Ruland, Burtt(s), and Cluess court!

It's no secret Coach Cluess has had some health problems. You just never know, so just don't wait on it. He's ok!

IMO these are the Iona hoops legends that need to be recognized in this order:
1. Cluess (court dedication) 2. Ruland (jersey retired) 3. Valvano 4. Burtt (jersey retired)

Just like I thought that JV and Jeff should have been honored at the same time, I think that Steve and Gary should be as well. They came to Iona at the same time and while SB had a better career, primarily because of Gary's injuries, "Burtt and Springer", were always talked about as 'one'. At least that is how I see it. Recruited by JV, even though they never played for him, by staying with their Iona commitment after JV left they kept the tradition alive of Iona landing the best players in Metro NY.

I can see this banner raising getting a lot of media attention, and even TV attention. My concern is that with the students being home we will have a mostly empty HAC. I know that the President's Club has been invited to a 11:30 reception, but the Athletic Dept. will have a challenge filling the HAC. A couple of big wins would help.

ESPN will probably use any means available to promote the Jimmy V foundation. I know I might be wrong, but would like to hear what others think.

Not optimistic about widespread interest in Jimmy V.beyond the so called “bluehairs.” Students who graduated in 1980 when he left Iona are now 66. I doubt many current students have any idea who he is never mind his connection to Iona.

I doubt many current students have any idea who he is never mind his connection to Iona. They have probably heard of him due to ESPN. Surprisingly there was a lot of excitement when Guerin was honored. I believe it was the Manhattan game and students were fired up, chanting his name, and he was good with the crowd. Doubt you will see a similar reaction, it won't help that the person being honored won't be there. Like to see Cluess honored at a game where there is an expected big crowd. Hopefully that can happen in the next couple of years.

Last week I received an announcement from Advancement informing us that the January 7 game was an alumni event. No mention of Valvano.
