The problem with retiring jerseys and having ceremonies is that it is so subjective and no matter what we do, we are bound to leave someone deserving out. To address this issue, many schools have a specific criteria to make this process a bit more objective and unbiased. I would be all in favor of this at Iona. Look at UNC’s criteria as an example: At least one of these criteria must be met to qualify for a retired jersey at UNC: - Associated Press Player of the Year - Naismith College Player of the Year - John R. Wooden Award - Sporting News Player of the Year - Oscar Robertson Trophy - National Association of Basketball Coach of the Year Obviously the criteria would look very different at Iona, but I think we would be well served to establish something like this. This way we can honor legends of the past without arguing over who gets in versus who doesn’t. Hmmm, we could get very “creative” with this. I’ll start with… -Fog a mirror -Attain a degree in 7 years or less |

Reception before the game and the ceremony was nice. Great to see so many of the Valvano era players back on campus.

The athletic department did a terrific job with the Jimmy V ceremony. They even had Dick Vitale participate with a video recording. Thought this was an excellent presentation.

I think this was a poorly executed celebration of Jimmy V. While those in the house may have been able to assimilate the breath of the program, the TV presentation was focused on the presenter and not on those present to honor Jimmy V. Why not have Jimmy V’s family on the podium next to the presenter instead of being off to the side? Also, why not have the guest former players on the podium and why were they not introduced? Jimmy V’s todler daughter was at Mulcahy games along with her Mom, Pam, at least as often as I was; and I know Jimmy V would want his players on the podium with his family. At best, this is an unawareness of the scope of the Iona constituency and again demonstrates a lack of flair for the drama. Hey guys, the above may seem a little harsh; but believe me I am holding back here out of respect for you guys. |
