Not one of these guys have ever played in a 5 out motion. Their stats prior to Iona should have always been taken with a grain of salt. Some numbers translate (eg, Brown's assist to turnover ratio) while others won't (eg, Panzo 3s).
Let's also remember that SPU's defense is rated higher than everyone we've played outside of Col and St Joes. I know we missed a few wide open looks, but that's as much of a result of missing most shots vs SPU in general as anything. These are all things I expected, if you listened to my podcast.
As Tobin noted, the O struggles seeped into the other end. We didn't defend very well, against a team that doesn't make shots. Mentally weak bunch at the moment. That's on the PLAYERS, not the coaches.
Tomorrow's game will tell us more about this team than last night's.

Great post Guy! However, I didn’t feel it was SPU’s defense that rattled us as much as it was our total inability to make easy open shots. How many times can we miss open threes from the corner and uncontested runners in the lane? Once we go back to getting our standard of players in here, this program will take off under this coaching staff IMO.
Good morning to all. First and foremost we, as fans need to be more positive. The criticisms that I read about our program starting with players' and coaches needs to slow down! Lets be positive with constructive comments. I have watched our program since the Coach McDermott years through where we are now. I consider myself blessed to have a college basketball program to be a part of and yes follow. Some of you might think this forum gives you the opportunity to be critical. I believe our forum manager's intent was to share thoughts and support!! Iona Guy and 1970 alo ng with some others do this in the right way. Reference the negative comments we are not in the arena when our team and coaches are going through their prep work for games. I am confident our staff prepares our team for every game. There is evidence of this, in many instances, during the games. I have only missed two games so far and from a old coaches perspective I can see this!1 Yes we make mistakes but one constant is the energy that our team exhibits. Sure I can sit in the stands and say why did we do that. Why did we take 59 shots and connect on 18?? Guess what we were in position to make these shots. I am not being critical here with our forum members just making some constructive comments to all. Not being a "I" guy I know what it takes to build a program from the ground up. Its not easy. Coach in his interview last night spoke about the lack of mental toughness with our team. That should apply to us also. When I watch teams play I watch coaches. You can see in the faces of our coaches and our players their willingness to succeed. This will come. Be patient. Happy New Year to all Coach Al
Disagree with some of this, particularly in regards to criticism. I have not read anything unfair/untrue that has been posted. The results this year are up and down, but you are what your record says you are. I believe if you asked Tobin’s opinion of the team, it would be way more critical than what the members here have posted.
Screw “high character guys”. Get me someone who can shoot.
No reason you can't get high character guys who can shoot. The guys we have can shoot. The problem seems to be when the shots aren't going in they lose their confidence and pass up open looks and they let it affect their play in other areas, like defense for example or fighting for 50-50 balls.
Forgot to mention, if some guys aren't shooting well it appears to me they pass up open looks early in the shot clock and the carousel of passing the ball around the perimeter starts and sometimes doesn't stop until the shot clock makes everyone get off. Also more attacking the basket and not being afraid of getting your shot blocked would help. Take the ball right into the big men and draw the contact. If your shot gets blocked, so be it.

Couple of things. Most of the criticism of the HC has to do with PT of some of the players when they are not hitting their shots. Also, inferred from last night's game, there might be a communication problem. The one player that I can't understand is Panzo. He has a GREAT stroke on his 3pt shot, that it seems to me that they should be falling at a much better rate. Is he rushing his shot? We might be doing a poor job (and I have no idea) of getting him open looks. Sharkey mentioned Brice, and while he seems lost, understandably, on offense, his athleticism might help our press, even for a few minutes.
Bottom line, we have enough talent to compete RS, but foul shooting might end up costing us in AC. Still very early, but we (coaches/players/fans) need to see improvement.

Agree with this except, “still very early”. Tomorrow is game 15/31 of reg season

That was my point above--the SPU defense didn't give us much from 2, so we didn't shoot open 3s with confidence. Team has lots of psycological issues.

I think there has been enough of a sample size, where we are past the "work in process" stage to "it is what it is".
Team will have some great shooting nights and get some blowout wins, but overall the upperclassmen are a major disappointment. If Gordon was benched tonight, and not injured, sit his ass to start the game Sunday with Tretout right next to him. Enough.
Hope to see Sunday: Shema Panzo Brown Aranguren Quigley
At least we will see energy and fight right from the start.
Think we should stop trying to figure out our best lineup 16 games into the season and just ride or die with the 5th years and hope they figure it out. Panzo needs to learn to do something else when he’s not making shots. No other aspect to his game at all besides the deep ball

Panzo needs to shoot better from three, no debate on that point. Yeah, would be nice if he added to his 2.5rpg, but outside of Brown I view him as the best defender of the upperclassmen transfers. He also has a calming influence on the court and very solid ball control..20/5 A/TO ratio. He's the one guy on the team that can get hot and carry Iona from beyond the arc. His shooting won't improve sitting on the bench, so he's the one I will ride with, along with Brown.
Brown defends, plays hard and has a great A/TO ratio. Don't agree to just live or die with the grads, and hand them starting spots and PT, especially only halfway thru the season. Too much season remaining to live or die with any players.

Best bet to start the game with high energy, ball control. Just my opinion
Keep in mind the upperclassmen will be gone after this year. The frosh are the future and I hope we keep them happy. Very happy with a sophomore backcourt of JQ and JA. Incoming class gives great guard depth and what looks like a starting PF. The rest of the roster should provide a fourth starter, with one spot to fill. And please don't remind me about how things always change. I just want to see what I see.

Now that I read this… Tretout’s best game outside of SHU was coming off the bench against Fairfield. And you are right, because we haven’t been a very good team dealing with adversity so these strong starts are very important.

Nowadays don’t think we can count on anyone for the future. Have to play whomever is your best shot to win at the moment. The problem is I’m not sure whom that is one day vs the next.
