Guy, I just don't enough about it to send you a DM (Damn Message). But when it comes to posting, not knowing has never stopped me. So I'll ask the following: 1. Is it taxable? And if so are taxes withheld? 2. Do the players know what the other players are being paid? 3. Based on recruiting offers from other teams, is it general info what other conferences pay their players? 4. Is NIL now the law of the land? Or different in each state?

Will NIL and the transfer portal cause the end of the MAAC? And may Iona eventually drop to D-2? Not sure about either but think both are possible.

You mean is it taxable income for the players? Yes, it is. 2. I would guess yes, otherwise how would they know what their "market value" is? 3. There is a database, but I don't think it's public per se. 4. Too soon to tell! Each state could create their own rules, to your point. Wild west right now.

I think it's more likely that we see a D1AA type of situation, like football. No, I don't think the MAAC is going to end--and if it is, we'll find another home. We are in FAR better shape than most of our MAAC colleagues.

I absolutely HATE it.
Mid and low majors cannot compete with power conference schools with football.
It kills the game as we know it.

Completely anonymous! (other than me, I mean) Long time die hard fan but honest opinion is as much as I support the team I can’t see me giving my own money to contribute to NIL. I tend to think most people feel that way and don’t have money to burn. System has to change. It’s not sustainable to the extent it relies on normal fans to not only pay for tickets but also to pay players. Where is our NIL money really sourced right now?

If players have to pay taxes on NIL monies received, would their scholarships be counted as income, also? And has anyone heard any rumors that our former coach, RP, has already figured out ways to make under the table payments, in order to avoid taxes? P.S. Understand his office is scrubbed on a daily basis, just in case the FBI or NCAA are up to their usual dirty tricks.

With regard to 4. we can tell simply by NIL no longer standing for Name, Image, and Likeness but rather as a term of art to mean all money paid to players (including collectives not run by the schools that pool money to pay players to perform) that the law regarding compensation is in flux and developing. IMO I think we're heading toward a situation where players will be employees of the school. Like other employees they will be able to enter into multiple year contracts if they and the school want. Those contracts presumably would come with penalties for breach and require buy outs if other schools want to hire the players akin to what we see with coaches now.

Like I said on Twitter, the whole situation has ruined my favorite thing in sports, college basketball. I have no vested interest in the players and don’t intend to, because who the hell knows which players have 1 foot out the door already? It’s a disgrace.

You’d be better able to set restrictions that would not be capable of being imposed, especially if they unionized. The way the pros set restrictions league wide (such as minimum age/college/salary caps) is only through collective bargaining on union basis.
