Prior to this year, the most automatics to the NIT, since the rule change was made a few years ago, was 8. This year there were 14 automatic bids to the NIT!

Both VCU and Georgia were considered as in NIT - NOPE! Both make NCAA. UAB also. What's not a good sign is Richmond as a 12 seed. Would've thought they'd be higher.

This may be a reality many here need to come to terms with! The realization is that while the NCAA and NIT invites are accomplishment based, the CIT and CBI invites are more about money and connections. The CIT seems in a real rush to invite over 100 RPI achools while many sub 100 RPI teams hang in the balance. Why a rush to sign 3rd place Rider, with one starter undergoing surgery and another starter hobbled, when the 2nd place team is still available. Because Don Harnum is on the Tournament Advisory Committee.

I still think the stronger teams had "placeholders" in place, pending the NIT selections. The Riders of the world had no prayer at the NIT, so why not commit as early as possible.

Just saw Alejo crying on an ESPNU video showing highs an lows of championship week. Painful to watch. Why can't we look forward to another tortuous 1 point last second NCAA loss!
I am not caring much about this CIT, but I guess it is better than nothing.
I have a strange feeling SPC is winning a couple an Dunne ends up with a big job.

Joebird, don't let the past haunt your present.
If Iona wins tomorrow night's game, they can win this tournament. If they get by tomorrow, you'll feel better about things as they pile up a bunch of wins.
The St. Peter's offense won't be able to do enough vs Purdue. Remember that it took Dune three cracks at both Iona and Fairfield to even play them competitively. SPC did a tremendous job in the tournament, no doubt. But they played over their heads a bit.

Prior to this year, the most automatics to the NIT, since the rule change was made a few years ago, was 8. This year there were 14 automatic bids to the NIT! As a follow-up on these "Fab 14", I decided to take a look at how this group fared. Well, as expected, not so great... as a group they went 4-10 in the first round. Even more pathetic, 3 of the 4 wins were against fellow Fab 14 members. Fairfields first round win against Colorado St. was the only W against a non-automatic qualifier. Way to go dawg! Not sure what this all means besides teams from conferences generally located below the Mason-Dixon line (Big South, Sun Belt, Southland, SWAC, MEAC, etc) pretty much suck and have displaced solid local area teams that (with 18-19 wins) would have been automatic NIT teams in days gone by.
